Jose Parla at Bryce Wolkowitz
For his solo debut at Brooklyn-Based artist, José Parlá presents a Chelsea exhibition for his solo debut at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. The configuration of the gallery is usually a challenge for exhibitions but in this instance Parlá takes over the space with medium to large scale canvas works and a wall mural uniting the front and back rooms. As in previous work, Parlá presents the memories and sensations of world travels through abstraction and innumerable layers. The results are almost obsessive. It would be dismissive to write off Parlá as a hipper version of Pollock or Twombly - the stories and culture woven throughout the body of his works is fresh and in a perspective all his own. Walls, Diaries and Paintings by Jose Parla runs through April 16 at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, 505 West 24th Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
