This Must Be the Place by Paolo Sorrentino will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival

Running officially in competition for the Cannes Film Festival 2011, This Must be the Place is the latest film by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. Casting Sean Penn as Cheyenne, a jaded former rockstar retired in Dublin, the film unravels upon Cheyenne’s discovery of his father’s past endured at Auschwitz. In an attempt to reconcile with his father, Cheyenne returns to New York only to find he has passed away. A journey of self-discovery across America ensues, as Cheyenne hunts the his father’s tormentor, Nazi war criminal and SS Officer Aloise Lange, across the States. Titled after the song by the Talking Heads, This Must Be The Place stars Sean Penn with Frances Dormond and Harry Dean Stanton with a film score featuring music from Italian band Nino Bruno e el 8 tracce, a band Sorrentino had previously collaborated with for his film L’uomo in più. Following awards for his films Le Conseguenze dell’amore (2004) and Il Divo (2008), it was the latter that inspired Penn to work with Sorrentino, in what is set to be an intriguing highlight as it premieres at Cannes this year.
