Ulysses by Soundwalk

In the Fall of 2009 the Soundwalk collective embarked aboard an old gaff rigged sailboat equipped with scanners and aerial antennae for a sound odyssey recording the hertzian frequencies along the shores of the Mediterranean basin. Soundwalk continuously scanned and recorded all possible radio interceptions over a range of 40 miles around the boat while close to shore and far out at sea. The 1500 hours of sonic material recorded captures the essence of the Mediterranean coasts: conversations of Libyan fishermen on Greek cargo ships, passing yachts on the Corsican coast, customs officers off the Bay of Naples, voices and whispers, excerpts of music, distant radio noises and morse code communication. The resulting work is resonant of Homer’s Odyssey in the form of a sonic fresco totaling 24 hours.

The sleek, sexy and fabulous Aquariva by Marc Newson debuted Tuesday at Gagosian 21st Street. Newson reimagines the classic Italian motorboat for 2010 available for sale as part of an edition of 22 through Gagosian Gallery. The ultimate in luxury, the Rivaboat is presented alongside some of Newson’s other designs including a jet plane and ultra lightweight bicycle. The Happy Prince by Ryan Gander

Inspired by the childrens story The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde, a relationship between a swallow and a prince, the european artist Ryan Gander makes a lyrical sculpture of ruin on view outside the Doris C. Freedman plaza. The sculpture is an echoe of the climax final scene of the novel, when the Prince’s heart, sword, helmet, and the body of the dead swallow, lay amidst the debris.
